As calls to shift power, resources, and decision-making closer to local actors gain momentum, organizations are at different stages in reflecting on what this means for their structures, partnerships, and ways of working.

This workshop will create space to

  • reflect on key concepts and terminology,
  • take stock of where participating NGOs currently stand,
  • discuss enablers and barriers to local leadership, and
  • identify what organizations need to do to strengthen and advance local leadership in practice.

It also marks the starting point and foundation of a series of learning sessions on local leadership to be organized by Global Responsibility in 2026 and 2027. Topics for future in-depth trainings and workshops will be identified during this workshop.

Target group: We invite senior-level staff of Austrian development and humanitarian NGOs, as well as staff responsible for advancing localization and locally-led development within their organizations, to participate. Organizations are encouraged to have two staff members take part.

Facilitators

The workshop will be facilitated by Smruti Patel and Koenraad Van Brabant from the Global Mentoring Initiative. They have accompanied many civil society organizations in their learning journeys on local leadership and are closely involved in research and policy processes on the topic.
