Due diligence plays an important role in ensuring accountability and managing risk. Yet, rigid requirements can create barriers for local organizations, shift risks onto local partners, and undermine the principles of locally led development.

This interactive workshop will explore how due diligence can become a pathway to building trust rather than a filter that excludes. Together, we will reflect on how current practices shape partnerships, whose leadership they recognize, and how risks and responsibilities are distributed.

Drawing on practical examples and recommendations for relationship-based due diligence, participants will explore approaches that strengthen trust-based relationships, inclusion, and local agency. Through collective reflection and discussion, they will identify concrete changes to make due diligence more flexible, equitable, and responsive to local contexts.

Trainer

The workshop will be facilitated by Ruth Njiri, Head of Partnerships at Cohere, an international NGO registered in Kenya, Uganda and the UK that specialises in building holistic partnerships with Refugee-Led Organisations (RLOs) in refugee-hosting areas. Cohere works to reimagine humanitarian practice by centering trust-based relationships, inclusion and elevating the role of refugee leadership within the humanitarian response framework. Ruth’s work focuses on influencing how donors think about funding refugee led organisations by building equitable, relationship-based partnerships in which refugee leaders drive decisions and control resources. She supported the development of Cohere’s position paper on trust-building and due diligence and regularly writes on these topics.
