There are 500 million small-scale farmers worldwide, producing one third of the world’s food, yet many face chronic hunger and lack essential information to improve harvests, income, and climate resilience. With declining public extension services, digital agricultural advisory services (DAS) offer a promising solution to equip farmers with sustainable practices. However, DAS currently reaches only a small fraction of smallholder farmers, particularly excluding women and youth who face unequal access to these tools.

This webinar touches upon the following questions:

  • How can knowledge about sustainable land management practices be featured to smallholder farmers through DAS? What is the role of the WOCAT database
  • What are the barriers and opportunities for smartphone-based DAS applications, taking into account specific country contexts?
  • What is the role of Community Based Agents (CBAs) in enabling digital adoption?
  • What does it take for DAS providers and partners (including NGOs) to scale up their services and unlock DAS’ full potential?

Speakers

Nicole Harari (Centre for Development and Environment, University of Bern), Bobbi Gray (Grameen Foundation), and Alizee Boutard (Altai Consulting SAS) will share learnings and insights from the 5-year action research project called AgriPath. The project aims to scale sustainable agriculture practices, specifically sustainable land management practices, amongst smallholder farmers by identifying, evaluating and promoting effective DAS services. They will provide an introduction to the AgriPath toolkit, a practical guide to support DAS implementing organisations and DAS providers. They will also provide an introduction to the Agripath scaling framework.
