Online session (EN)
04.12.2026 | 09:00 – 10:30 UTC+1 (Austrian time) | online (MS Teams)
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is often presented as a story of innovation and progress. But whose labour, resources and knowledge make it possible? In this online session, participants will explore the concept of digital colonialism by tech journalist Ingo Dachwitz and will hear experiences from Joan Kinyua, who is a digital rights activist in the field of AI and the President of the Data Labelers Association in Kenya.
Digital technologies, with their promises of efficiency and process optimization, are seen by many as a panacea. But who pays the price for them?
In their book Digital Colonialism: How Tech Corporations and Great Powers are Dividing Up the World Among Themselves, tech journalist Ingo Dachwitz and globalization expert Sven Hilbig shed light on the global power dynamics and economic structures within which the digital revolution is taking place. They argue that colonial relations are perpetuated through digitalization, specifically in AI, meaning that a digital society is achieved at the expense of the Global South.
During this event, Ingo Dachwitz will expand participants‘ understanding of this issue by discussing the analytical insights and theoretical background of the book.
Joan Kinyua will then engage participants in the struggles and demands of AI workers in the Global South. Together, we will discuss the political action required to ensure digitalization is shaped in an ethical and globally just manner, reflecting on what a just and decolonial approach to digitalization means for education and global justice education.
