Power shapes every aspect of development and humanitarian work – who sets priorities, whose knowledge is valued, how decisions are made, and how partnerships are formed. Yet power can often feel difficult to name, uncomfortable to examine, or easy to overlook in our day-to-day practice. Global Responsibility’s online series invites participants to pause and look more closely at how power operates across the sector, within our organizations, and in ourselves.

The second session focuses on what shifting power looks like in practice and how we can actively work towards more equitable partnerships. Reflecting together with partners, participants will explore how power shows up in partnerships from different perspectives. The session will also introduce the PARTOS Power Awareness Tool (PAT) as a practical resource for examining decision-making dynamics and identifying where power can be shifted in more equitable ways.

What participants can expect to learn in this session

  • See what shifting power looks like in practice, grounded in a concrete example from the sector
  • Deepen their understanding through structured reflection with partners present, hearing how the same relationship feels from different sides
  • Get to know the PARTOS Power Awareness Tool and how to apply it in practice with partners

Target group: Staff of Austrian development and humanitarian NGOs & partner organizations. We warmly invite Austrian NGOs to share this invitation with their partner organizations.

A third session will be offered in early September to reflect on participants’ practical experiences using the Power Awareness Tool, exchange learning, and discuss next steps for embedding power-aware practice in partnerships. The third session will allow for an open conversation on alternative approaches to systemic change as well as limitations of current efforts to shift power. Further information will follow soon.
